GAC Project

The Defiance Water Plant Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) Project is finally underway!

Crews from Peterson Construction have begun work onsite including relocating and replacing the Carbon Dioxide Tank, as well as beginning the construction of the basin that will hold the treated water that will be taken through the GAC filters before disinfection.

This new treatment will offer many benefits such as reduction of disinfection by-products such as total trihalomethanes (TTHM’s) which is the source of the violation letters that the City has sent out over the last couple of years. It will also provide a barrier for algal toxins that could be produced by algal blooms in the reservoir. Another great benefit is the improvement that we can expect in the taste of our water. GAC is very effective in removing the compounds that are produced by algae that create taste and odor issues for us from time to time. The system is scheduled to go on during the winter of 2021-22 and we are looking forward to it. This is just one more exciting thing going on in our great community!
