Council Member Biographies
City Council President David McMaster has lived in the City of Defiance since moving here in 1986 to attend the Defiance College.
Since graduating David has served the public as a social worker, private school teacher, legal assistant, writer, translator, and lay minister.
David married his wife, Kelly (Morton) McMaster in 1989 and has five children: Madeleine, Claire, Shea, Liam and Sydney McMaster. They are members at King’s Cross Church.
As City Council President David wants to provide an example of mature leadership and work in concert with the City Council Members, City Administration, and the Defiance citizens to ensure that Defiance continues to blossom as a Great Place to Live.
Joe Eureste, who was elected in November 2017, is no stranger to serving the city of Defiance as a councilman. He last served on city council from January 2002, through December 2013 as an At-Large Councilman.
Eureste ran for a seat on city council, because he still has a strong belief and support for volunteerism and public service. “I feel it is important, if given a chance, that we all serve our community as a public servant.”
Before being elected to city council in 2002, Eureste was first elected to an open seat, as a non-paid Defiance City School Board member in 1993 and continuing to a second term, through 2001. He was elected school board president in 1996.
Councilman Eureste feels that providing our residents with good city services, for the taxes they pay, should be a council priority. He also feels that all city councilman should provide good leadership and help make good decision on how we serve the public’s interest, fulfill their expectations and maintain their trust.
Eureste is a 1972 graduate of Defiance High school, and attended Defiance, Adrian and Northwest State Community colleges. He has worked for the General Motors Corporation, in Defiance, for the last 45 ½ years and functions as a UAW/GM Benefits Plans Representative.
While previously serving on city council from 2002 to 2013, Eureste served as chairman to the utility committee, sewer committee, economic development committee, served as a member of the tax incentive review council, city traffic commission, in 2006 he attained certification by the Ohio Municipal League for its Municipal Leadership Training Academy and in 2013 was elected temporary president pro-tem.
In our community Eureste has served on the board of trustee for the Defiance Area YMCA, United Way of Defiance County, ProMedica Defiance Regional Hospital, Defiance Community Cultural Council and the Women and Family Services. Other organizations he served are: Defiance 2000 mentoring program, Junior Achievement of NW Ohio, past president Defiance Athletic Boosters and was a head coach of Defiance Junior High seventh grade football team.
Eureste and his wife Jennifer, have two sons, Jason May and Barney Eureste.
Steve Waxler was appointed to fill Larry Bryant’s seat (Larry stepped down) as Second Ward Councilman. Steve graduated from Defiance High School in 1978 and is employed as a Safety Director at Hornish Brothers Inc. Steve retired after serving 36 years with Defiance Fire Fighters. Steve is a Chairman of Trustees of St. John’s Lutheran Church and is part of the Northwest Ohio Volunteer Fire Association.
Steve’s goal as councilman is to assist the Public in any way possible to make *Defiance A Great Place to Live* and to assure the public’s opinion matters, which Steve will follow through to the best of his ability.
Steve has been married to his wife Ginna for 36 years; they have 3 adult sons and 3 grandkids.
Jill is a 1975 graduate of Defiance Senior High School. She went on to earn her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and Special Education from Bowling Green State University in 1979. Jill taught for 36 years at Continental Local School District in First Grade and Junior High Special Education. While teaching she earned the Martha Holding Jennings Scholarship award and the Starfish Award. She was active with the School Musicals and plays in the pit band, assistant director and director. She was also a member of NEA, OEA and her local association where she held the offices of building rep. , secretary, vice president and president.
Mrs. Krutsch is currently retired but does work part time at the Marshalls department store and volunteers at the ProMedica Thrift store. She is a member of Trinity United Methodist church where she is currently serving as a trustee.
Jill is married to Richard Krutsch and they have three children, Jordan, Adelle and Lauren. They have two grandchildren (Owen and Molly) and one on the way.
Jill and her family enjoy the outdoors, so this past summer they purchased a a camper in hopes of doing some camping in the area and hopefully go out west! Jill enjoys playing the piano, singing, crafting and going antiquing.
She is excited about being on the Defiance City Council.
Stephen (Steve) J. Corbitt was elected to City Council as First Ward Councilman on January 1, 2020. Steve graduated from Washington High School, Massillon, Ohio in 1973. In 1976, he married Judy (Smith) Corbitt and they have three adult children and seven grandchildren. In his free time he enjoys golfing and attending his grandchildren’s activities.
Steve has been employed by Hornish Bros. Trucking for over 32 years and is currently the Vice President of Operations. Steve is a member of Free Christian Church of God in Continental, OH and has served as an Elder for many years. Steve is also a mentor for the Defiance County Mentoring Program.
Second Ward Councilman, John R.Hancock, is a graduate of both Tinora High School and Northwest State Community College, completed the Supervision and Team-Based Management Certificate program at Owens Community College, and is currently studying Business Administration at Defiance College.
John was employed at Sauder Woodworking for 17 years where he worked his way up from general labor to supervision. He left Sauder’s to pursue a career as a licensed realtor with Welles Bowen Real Estate. He also has been driving bus for Defiance City Schools for six years.
John is a member of the Defiance Chamber of Commerce, Defiance High School Athletic Boosters, Knights of Columbus Local 1039, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 2094, and Ohio Association of Public Service Employees (OAPSE) Local 009. He also is a member of St. Mary Catholic Church where he has participated in numerous activities from Retreat Leader for the parish retreat to the Youth Elect Service (Y.E.S.) program.
John and his wife of twenty-two years, Lisa Crumit-Hancock, have two children, Katie and Will.
John enjoys watching local sports and spending time with his family.
“I was born and raised in Defiance, OH. I was a 1993 graduate of Defiance High School. I also received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the University of Cincinnati in 1997. In 2005 I married my wife Laura, also a product of Defiance, and we have two children. I am the owner of a small business in Defiance that has been in operation since 2004 and I come from a family of small business owners that have worked hard and made their homes in Defiance. I am also currently on the advisory board for the plumbing and heating program at Four County. My parents, Dave and the late Sandy Mast, were big supporters of Defiance and specifically the youth athletic programs. It was in that sense of contribution, community and hard work that I chose to enter into this endeavor in the 3rd ward council seat. “
Fourth Ward Councilman, Chris Engel, is currently serving his third term on City Council. He has served as Chair of the Streets and Sidewalk, and Finance Committees, and member of the Building and Lands, and Water and Sewer Committees.
Chris is a member of the Defiance Eagles and Moose clubs. Chris enjoys watching Basketball, Softball, and Baseball. Chris has Umpired ASA Softball for over 44 years.
Chris Graduated from Ayersville High School, had classes of Business Management and Accounting at Northwest State Community College.
Chris has been selling automobiles for 43 years. Chris is employed at Christy Motor Sales in Archbold.
Chris resides in Defiance with his Wife Marcia. Chris has a Daughter Stacie Johnson and a Grandson Brady..
Lisa Elders was named Council Clerk in May 2007, a Defiance High School graduate where Lisa was a three year varsity basketball and softball player. Lisa is a member of the Ohio Municipal Clerks’ Association, and participated in the Ohio Public Records and Open Meeting Laws training. Lisa has been married to her husband Lowell Jr., a lead technician for Ohio Gas Company, for 28 years. Their family; Ashley (daughter) engaged to Chris Butler and Jacob (son), who passed away July 23, 2017 at the age of 19. Lisa & Lowell are proud grandparents; Brooklyn.
Lisa has been involved in coaching softball and baseball. Lisa enjoys watching movies, putting puzzles together, and just spending time with her family. ROLL TIDE!!!
