Welcome to Defiance, Ohio
Mike McCann, Mayor: City of Defiance
It is my honor to send a warm welcome to you in the hope that you will find Defiance the perfect place to put down permanent roots or just to visit. Being born and raised here, it is my hope that you will visit and see for yourself the hometown atmosphere that flourishes not only in the city limits, but also in the surrounding small towns and rural areas as well.
There are many options for lifelong learning, including public and private educational systems and churches of many denominations. Located in the city is the newly completed Defiance City Schools and Athletic Facilities campus, and we have several parochial elementary schools as well. We are also the home of Defiance College - Go Yellow Jackets!
With a strong economy, many career and business opportunities abound. Several small businesses line the thriving beautiful downtown district and neighborhood business corridors. Our north side houses regional shopping and larger retailers to complete your shopping needs. New development is always welcome as we consistently strive for progress in the city.
Nestled at the confluence of the the Maumee River, a state Scenic and Recreational River, and the Auglaize River, a lesson rich in history of the past several hundred years with stories of American Indians, American and British military, and the site of a fort that offered protection and defied "all the devils in hell" await. The Andrew L. Tuttle Memorial Museum is the perfect place to begin your historical journey. Some of America's top military leaders have grown from their roots in Defiance. General "Mad" Anthony Wayne may have indeed served as the inspiration for highly decorated combat veteran, as well as Major General Lawrence Livingston, USMC, Ret. (deceased), and Major General Stephen T. Sargeant, USAF, Ret. We salute all of our hometown heroes and all the men and women service members and veterans who have paid the price for the freedoms we all love and enjoy, and we thank them for their service and sacrifices. Defiance is also proud to be the hometown of 2006 Indianapolis 500 Champion Sam Hornish, Jr., and former major league pitchers Jonathon Niese, Chad Billingsley, Chad Reineke, Justin Hancock, and Rodney Scott Taylor. Twenty-sixth time World Horseshoe Champion Alan Francis also hails from our community.
