Celebrating the Buckeye Trail’s 60th Birthday!
Buckeye TrailFest brings hikers and outdoor enthusiasts of all ages to northwest Ohio.
The annual Buckeye TrailFest, May 16-19, 2019, will be bringing hundreds of hikers from around Ohio and surrounding states to northwest Ohio to discover trails and the natural beauty known for this region. The Buckeye TrailFest will offer hikes, workshops and guest speakers both Friday and Saturday to learn firsthand about the area. The annual event held near the Buckeye Trail, will be hosted this year by Widewater Retreat located near Liberty Center, just off the Buckeye Trail along the Maumee River.
The 1440 mile Buckeye Trail passes through Defiance, a Buckeye Trail Town, as it loops the state of Ohio. On Friday, May 17 at 1:00 p.m., meet at the Defiance Public Library to hike through the city. Included on the hike will be Pontiac Park (a shuttle will be provided for transport to the north side of the river), Fort Defiance, the site of Fort Winchester, various portions of the Ohio & Erie Canal with specific attention given to the downtown locks, the 1918 school building, Riverside Cemetery and the Defiance Reservoir with its newly constructed northern trail, among other features. The significant role that Defiance played in the early settlement of northwest Ohio will be a focus.
