The Clinton Street Bridge “anticipated” to close on Feb.11, 2019

Story by TODD HELBERG @cntoddhelberg thelberg@crescent-news.com

The bridge will be removed and replaced next year by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), primarily at the state’s cost.

ODOT informed Defiance city officials Thursday that the closure is “anticipated” on Feb. 11, with a 270-day (nine-month) window needed for construction.

ODOT recently signed a contract with Great Lakes Construction Company, Hinckley — a community in Medina County, just south of Cleveland — to replace the bridge spanning the Maumee River. The contract price is $8.3 million.

The company plans to start mobilizing equipment during the week of Jan. 7, according to the city, with causeway construction (in the river bed) beginning the week of Jan. 14.

Temporary traffic signals at the Domersville Road and Baltimore Road interchanges on U.S. 24 — the stated detour routes for the project — also will be installed during the second week of January, ODOT noted

ODOT plans to hold a public meeting at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 16 at Defiance High School to review the project.

“We’re thrilled that we finally have a date we can release to the public,” said Defiance Mayor Mike McCann. “We’re anxious to get the project started, and even more anxious to get it completed. And we hope the public will be very cautious as they drive through the detoured routes, especially the Domersville Road corridor.”

City firefighters will man a temporary station at the county EMA building in Brunersburg to serve areas north of the bridge during the closure. With ODOT planning to shut down the bridge on Feb. 11, Fire Chief Bill Wilkins said the plan is to man the station on Jan. 28.

“If that’s what truly transpires (the Feb. 11 closure date), we would move out there on Jan. 28 — that Monday two weeks before,” he said. “If we have to make adjustments to our plans we can do that prior to the actual closure.”
