Council Member Biographies
I would like to say it has been an honor to serve you.
I was elected Council At Large for the 2010 term, and re-elected in 2014. After serving six years as Council At Large, city council members selected me to replace the outgoing Council President to serve the remaining two years as Council President.
Family: Wife Kristin, Five children, 12 grandchildren
Employment: Hornish Group, Sr Vice President of Operations, where I have worked for 33 years.
As council president I believe the number one priority is to maintain a positive working relationship with council members and the board of control.
Fourth Ward Councilman, Chris Engel, is currently serving his third term on City Council. He has served as Chair of the Streets and Sidewalk, and Finance Committees, and member of the Building and Lands, and Water and Sewer Committees.
Chris is a member of the Defiance Eagles and Moose clubs. Chris enjoys watching Basketball, Softball, and Baseball. Chris has Umpired ASA Softball for over 44 years.
Chris Graduated from Ayersville High School, had classes of Business Management and Accounting at Northwest State Community College.
Chris has been selling automobiles for 43 years. Chris is employed at Christy Motor Sales in Archbold.
Chris resides in Defiance with his Wife Marcia. Chris has a Daughter Stacie Johnson and a Grandson Brady..
Councilman-at-large, John R.Hancock, is a graduate of both Tinora High School and Northwest State Community College, completed the Supervision and Team-Based Management Certificate program at Owens Community College, and is currently studying Business Administration at Defiance College.
John was employed at Sauder Woodworking for 17 years where he worked his way up from general labor to supervision. He left Sauder’s to pursue a career as a licensed realtor with Welles Bowen Real Estate. He also has been driving bus for Defiance City Schools for six years.
John is a member of the Defiance Chamber of Commerce, Defiance High School Athletic Boosters, Knights of Columbus Local 1039, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 2094, and Ohio Association of Public Service Employees (OAPSE) Local 009. He also is a member of St. Mary Catholic Church where he has participated in numerous activities from Retreat Leader for the parish retreat to the Youth Elect Service (Y.E.S.) program.
John and his wife of twenty-two years, Lisa Crumit-Hancock, have two children, Katie and Will.
John enjoys watching local sports and spending time with his family.
Jill is a 1975 graduate of Defiance Senior High School. She went on to earn her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and Special Education from Bowling Green State University in 1979. Jill taught for 36 years at Continental Local School District in First Grade and Junior High Special Education. While teaching she earned the Martha Holding Jennings Scholarship award and the Starfish Award. She was active with the School Musicals and plays in the pit band, assistant director and director. She was also a member of NEA, OEA and her local association where she held the offices of building rep. , secretary, vice president and president.
Mrs. Krutsch is currently retired but does work part time at the Marshalls department store and volunteers at the ProMedica Thrift store. She is a member of Trinity United Methodist church where she is currently serving as a trustee.
Jill is married to Richard Krutsch and they have three children, Jordan, Adelle and Lauren. They have two grandchildren (Owen and Molly) and one on the way.
Jill and her family enjoy the outdoors, so this past summer they purchased a a camper in hopes of doing some camping in the area and hopefully go out west! Jill enjoys playing the piano, singing, crafting and going antiquing.
She is excited about being on the Defiance City Council.
Peter M. Lundberg was elected as First Ward Councilman in January 2012. A 1968 graduate of Defiance High School he traveled with “Up With People” from 1968 -1969. A member of the United States Army from 1970 to 1973 he attained the rank of SPC 4. While attending Defiance College from 1973 – 1975 he studied Art and Business. Pete has been involved in the Defiance Community for many years having served on the Defiance Area Cultural Commission and Board Member, Past Board Member Defiance Area Chamber of Commerce (three times), Defiance Rotary Board Member, Defiance Development and Visitors Bureau Board Members, Past Member of the Defiance City Charter Commission and Past Member of the Defiance Civil Service Commission. Pete currently services as Council’s Chairman of the Building and Lands Committee and is also a member of the Waterworks – Service Committee, the Public Utilities, Light & Gas Committee and the Police and Fire Committee. Pete is a retired restaurant and catering owners (Charlie’s Down Under and Charlie’s on the Road). Married to his wife, Nancy, he is a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and Defiance Rotary.
Councilman-at-large Jared Orzolek is a 2003 graduate of King’s College of Wilkes-Barre, Pa. He obtained is MBA from Defiance College in 2011 and works as a regional sales manager for FWT LLC of Hicksville.
Orzolek serves on the Defiance College Purple and Gold Club board and is a board member of the Defiance County Community Improvement Corporation. He married Mariah O’Shea in 2006 and they have a daughter, Bianca, 2.
Orzolek enjoys hunting and fishing, attending sporting events and spending time with family and friends. He is a member of St. John Catholic Church of Defiance.
Third Ward councilman Benjamin Pierce was appointed to his seat at the beginning of 2017. An Eagle Scout and graduate of Ayersville High School, Benjamin went on to earn his undergraduate degree in World Politics and International Affairs from the University of Toledo as well as his commission as an officer in the US Army in 2009. Benjamin still serves in the US Army reserves currently holding the rank of Captain.
After college, Benjamin moved to New York City and began his career at American Express as a project analyst. He was later recruited by Morgan Stanley as a senior manager and then took a manager position with the KPMG firm advising Fortune 100 companies.
Benjamin, a fan of the arts, also had the opportunity to participate in several off-Broadway theatre productions and musicals while in New York City.
In 2015, Benjamin moved to Defiance and took a role as a Vice President at First Federal Bank.
Benjamin’s favorite writer is Neil Gaiman, his favorite novel is American Gods, his favorite artist is David Bowie, and his favorite Star Wars film is the Empire Strikes Back.
Steve Waxler was appointed to fill Larry Bryant’s seat (Larry stepped down) as Second Ward Councilman. Steve graduated from Defiance High School in 1978 and is employed as a Safety Director at Hornish Brothers Inc. Steve retired after serving 36 years with Defiance Fire Fighters. Steve is a Chairman of Trustees of St. John’s Lutheran Church and is part of the Northwest Ohio Volunteer Fire Association.
Steve’s goal as councilman is to assist the Public in any way possible to make *Defiance A Great Place to Live* and to assure the public’s opinion matters, which Steve will follow through to the best of his ability.
Steve has been married to his wife Ginna for 36 years; they have 3 adult sons and 3 grandkids.
Lisa Elders was named Council Clerk in May 2007, a Defiance High School graduate where Lisa was a three year varsity basketball and softball player. Lisa is a member of the Ohio Municipal Clerks’ Association, and participated in the Ohio Public Records and Open Meeting Laws training. Lisa has been married to her husband Lowell Jr., a lead technician for Ohio Gas Company, for 26 years. Their family; Ashley (daughter) engaged to Chris Butler and Jacob (son). Lisa & Lowell are proud grandparents; Brooklyn.
Lisa has been involved in coaching softball and baseball. Lisa enjoys watching movies, putting puzzles together, and just spending time with her family. ROLL TIDE!!!
