A Revitalized Downtown

The City occupies just over 12 square miles, with the main 'downtown' area nestled between the Auglaize and Maumee rivers. In recent years the downtown business district has received many improvements while maintaining its original small town charm.

Clinton Street Bridge Update

We are as excited as you are to find out when the Clinton Street Bridge will close! The replacement of the Clinton Street Bridge is an Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) Funded Project, not a City Project. So when ODOT announces the closing date of the Clinton Street Bridge AND WHEN the bridge Contractor gives us the start date for the replacement, the City will share that information and details with the community in advance. It will be a beautiful bridge once completed that Defiance will be proud of!

welcome to OUR City

mccanMike McCann, Mayor: City of Defiance

It is my honor to send a warm welcome to you where you will find Defiance the perfect place to just visit or put down permanent roots. Being born and raised here, it is my hope that you will visit and see for yourself the hometown atmosphere that flourishes not only in the city limits, but in the surrounding small towns and rural areas as well.
There are many options for life-long learning, including public and private educational systems and churches of many denominations. Located in the city is the newly completed Defiance City Schools and Athletic Facilities campus, and we have several parochial elementary schools as well. We are also the home of Defiance College – Go Yellow Jackets!

With a strong economy, many career and business opportunities abound. Several small businesses line the thriving beautiful downtown district and neighborhood business corridors. Our northside houses regional shopping and larger retailers to complete your shopping needs. New development is always welcome as we consistently strive for progress in the city.

Nestled at the confluence of the Scenic Maumee River and Auglaize River, a lesson rich in history of the past several hundred years with stories of American Indians, American & British military, and the site of a fort that offered protection and defied “all the devils in hell” await. The Andrew L. Tuttle Memorial Museum is the perfect place to begin your historical journey. Some of America’s top military leaders have grown from their roots in Defiance. General “Mad” Anthony Wayne may have indeed served as the inspiration for highly decorated combat veteran, Major General Lawrence Livingston and also to Major General Stephen T. Sargeant, both retired from military service today. We salute all of our Hometown Hero’s and all the men and women service members and veterans who have paid the price for the freedoms we all love and enjoy, and we thank them for their service and sacrifices. Defiance is also proud to be the home town of 2006 Indianapolis 500 Champion Sam Hornish, Jr., Texas Rangers organization pitcher Jonathon Niese, most recently Chicago Cubs organization pitcher Justin Hancock, and former major league pitchers Chad Billingsley, Chad Reineke, and Rodney Scott Taylor. Twenty-two time World Horseshoe Champion Alan Francis also hails from our community.  Defiance Development & Visitor’s Bureau and Defiance Area Chamber of Commerce can provide more information about the city of Defiance.
